I would like to have a word with whoever’s in charge of Feelings.
I think I was given too many.
Or perhaps it is just that I’m cycling through mine too rapidly,
Unaware that any moment I could run out
And spend the rest of my life pleasantly numb.
“What happened to her?” they’ll whisper.
“Oh, she’s fine,” they’ll say. “Ran through her Feelings too soon.”
“Ah,” they’ll say, shaking their heads sympathetically.
I’ll notice, but won’t particularly care.
And while I’m waiting, I might as well ask
Is there a caseworker assigned to Nerves?
Mine seem twisted and tightly bound together.
I can barely remember a time when they weren’t,
But I could swear this wasn’t always the case.
If it’s not too much trouble,
Could someone take a look into my file?
Could someone let me know if this is how it’s supposed to be?
I don’t mean to be a bother, and I know it’s not my place,
But I don’t understand what happened at that meeting
Where it was decided that donuts are both delicious
and very bad for your health
and where it was decided that humans are smart enough to invent guns
and dumb enough to use them.
Where it was decided that some people should have enough money
and other people would not
And that everyone would care a lot about it
No matter who you are.
I would like to propose an agenda
Where we revisit some of these issues
Is anyone hiring in the Department of Empathy?
Yes. I can wait.
“and where it was decided that humans are smart enough to invent guns
and dumb enough to use them.”
Good one! I’ve always said that human beings were smart enough to invent the atomic bomb but not smart enough to NOT invent the atomic bomb (variation on a theme). Yours is more elegantly stated.
I’ve been in the Department of Empathy for probably 30 years. I just never had a name for it until now. Thanks–?
Great writing, as always! Amazingly succinct.
I might just be severely undercaffeinated, but I’m crying a bit on the inside. Because I relate to this poem so much. Because I don’t like the hurting underneath it. Because the poem is just flat out creatively good.
If they do ever call this meeting, I’d like to be on the invite list, okay? Because I’m pretty sure that whoever decided to build my biology (particularly the brain kind) was very confused about some things at the time and should have been told to go home for the night.
I want you to know how very much I enjoy your blog. You say it clearly, you see what is important, you have humor even when discouraged, and I wish you were my friend!
Very creative and great message.
I was hoping if you could have a look at my blogpost, which I have penned as a response to the above poetry. It may not be as good, but it’s a try……

THANK YOU sooooo much for continuing to share your gift of expressing in perfect detail how so many of us feel in this life!
I think this is just great. Like the person above said, “just flat out creatively good,” and pleasantly surprising in how clear and interesting and thoughtful it was.
I no longer remember how I found your blog, but I do know it’s stuff like this that keeps me coming back and being excited when I see you’ve written something new. Best wishes for an excellent Friday, from a stranger on the internet. 🙂

This is lovely! I need to save this one in my heart because I know just how you feel. Bad news for you, I’m 52 and still feeling the anguish of it all. But the world keeps on spinning anyway so greet it with a smile.
well done!!!!
I like that lol
Good poem. Also, speaking from the perspective of 56 years, no, you don’t run out, though there times you’d like to.

Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line and a representative will get to you as soon as possible.
I like it. Wish I could make copies and hang them on phone poles all over the city. It would make a good wake up call for a lot of people.
so true and so awesome.

I love this!
Love the first line: “I would like to have a word with whoever’s in charge of Feelings. I think I was given too many”. So good. So true.
